THE ERPINGHAM CAMP, Joe Orton

Director: Jamie Garven

Set and Costume designer: Ariella Karatolou

Venue: Richard Burton RWCMD

For Orton’s play – that is set in a Butlin’s - there couldn’t be

a greater inspiration than the characteristics of a holiday

camp. The notion of mass-servitude and assumed state of

leisure that they offer, is the framework for Orton ‘s critique

on stiff human attitudes . A combination of past glory set

elements–especially in the context of the present classical

configuration of the actual venue-and an empty space

where rolling furniture take various unconventional uses,

set the riot space for a Bacchian change of the routine of

the camping site .
