BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE, Be’la Barto’k

Director: Adele Thomas

Set and Costume designer: Ariella Karatolou

Venue: Wales Millennium Centre

Unrealised MA project

An abstract space – a lead incarcerated world- is used to

describe the relationship between Bluebeard and his wife.

The libretto of this opera explores the subtle “cardiograph”

of the couple’s relationship. Gradually, a complex system of

bridges become partially deconstructed and seven doors

open, revealing an empty space .The characters unravel to

expose the frailty of dark human desires. At the end, we face

a wall of safety deposit boxes full with secrets. Or is it the

wall of a morgue perhaps?
